Abstract. Exponentiation by repeated squaring is a standard method for fast exponentiation in modern computation. We generalise it from one to two operations with a new algebraic structure called seeded monoid endomorphism (SME). We discuss SME algorithms, applications, and the relationship of SMEs with prefix scans.
